Football is the most popular team sport in the world. It has a huge following everywhere but especially in European and Latin American countries. Human beings have always used circular and spherical objects for games since the dawn of history. It is not definitely known when or where football was first played; however, historical research shows us that ball games have a history which goes back to Ancient Sumerians. It is known that the ancient Turks of Central Asia played a game in which teams of mixed gender tried to score goals by getting the ball through the goal of the other team by using only their feet and heads. The modern version of football has its origins in Britain and was introduced to the Ottoman Empire by British merchants who set up shop in the major cities of the empire. Istanbul, Izmir and Thessaloniki (Salonika) became the first three cities where football was played for the first time within the bounds of the Ottoman Empire.
Football is a sport played between two teams of eleven players and has unique rules of its own. The object of the game is to score by driving the ball into the opposing goal. Players are not allowed to touch the ball; however, they can use their torso or head to intercept a ball in midair provided that they abide by the rules. Goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms and only within the 18-yard box.
Football helps athletes improve their discipline, enhance their sense of competition and how to cope better with losing and winning. It also enhances one's sense of responsibility and decision-making abilities. It not only improves physical health but also mental health. It boosts team spirit and encourages teamwork.
